Lombok, Gerupuk, Fishing Village

The main project for the Surfcamp Lombok Foundation this year is the building of a multifunctional Activity Centre at Gerupuk Elementary school, aimed mainly for the children and young people but also for the whole community. Its purpose is to become a meeting point regarding courses, classes, workshops, performances, meetings, educational movie screenings and other projects and activities. A platform for learning but also a place where people can make their voices heard in a time of transition as the village is going through a time of change, moving from being a fishing community to a tourist destination. The project is a collaboration between SCL Foundation, Surfcamp Lombok, local carpenters and a team of Spanish architects specialized in sustainable eco building. Chris and Javi, the ambitious architects, are working voluntarily on the project and have changed the original design seen in our first blog entry. The concept is still to connect nature with the building, children and the rest of the local community but the new aerodynamic form incorporates many entrances to allow more fluid movement and will encourage people to come, go and use as they please. The space inside has no structural columns, as the idea is to create an open plan multifunctional performance area, creating shelter for the user. We believe the Activity Centre will be an important place for the people in Gerupuk village and are excited to see the project unfold.
