Cyrestis nivea, Map-Wing, Nymphalidae


Native South East Asia   Wingspan 5-6 cm

This Map Wing Butterfly gets it’s name from the ornate pattern and coloration found on the underside of the hind and fore wings pictured here. Closer observation will reveal markings resembling the contour lines found on detailed topographic maps. This Brazilian Nymphalid bears a resemblance to the Virginia Lady Butterfly found in the US. Notice the characteristic hind wing tail of this Hypanartia genus..
