Mandor Nature Reserve

Mandor

General
Mandor Nature Reserve comprises an area of 2,000 ha, located near the city Mandor, 80 km north of Pontianak. The reserve consists of heath forest and a small area of peat swamp. Although the reserve is small it is a fine example of heath forest, a lowland forest formation also known as kerangas.
Kerangas occurs round much of Borneo’s coastline on soils that are highly acidic and poor in bases. The plant community that is able to grow on these poor soils is very characterisitic and forms the main attraction of the reserve. The unique flora comprises many orchids and insectivorous plants.
During holidays and weekends, when local tourists visit the park, the reserve tends to be very crowded.
Access
Mandor Nature Reserve is easy accessible from Mandor. To get to Mandor take a (mini)bus from Batu Layang station in Pontianak heading for Sintang. Get out in Mandor. The reserve lies 3 km north of town.
