Alas River is the longest river along the western coast of Sumatra. It starts high in the central highlands of Aceh and streams towards the south through Mount Leuser National Park. This park has the most extended wildlife than anywhere else in Indonesia, with about 520 species of birds, 194 reptiles and 62 kinds of amphibious animals.

The river offers an interesting challenge which combined the wildness of the stream, the view of virgin rainforests, and the excitement of encountering with a parade of elephants or orangutans. The stream class varied between the classes of 1 to 5, from very easy to extreme.

Sobek, an American wildlife adventure company with experienced guides, is a pioneer for organizing rafting events in Alas River. They offer a one-day trip that usually starts from Serkil to Ketambe or Natam, near Kutacane, and several days rafting with a trip beginning in Ketambe and ending in Gelombang, South Aceh. It is quite an adventurous route since you have to pass through a dense tropical forest if you take a three day trip. At the stop points, if you feel like resting for a while, drop in the small cottages available around the area.
