The Minangkabau are one of many ethnic groups in Indonesia. Hailing
from the province of West Sumatra they are noted for being matrilineal
(land and property is handed down from mother to daughter) in spite of
their Islamic credentials. This state of affairs has encouraged many
Minangkabau men to leave their hometowns and seek their fortunes in
other Indonesian towns and cities. The Minangkabau have a proud
cultural heritage; dances include the plate dance – as performed by
both men and – as this photo shows – beautiful Minang women.
