Aceh, Sedati dance
Indra Zubir’s interest in dance came to the fore during his childhood. Born in the West Sumatran town of Bukittinggi in 1976, Indra began his dance career by teaching himself movements from music video clips. Gradually honing his skills, he took part in competitions throughout West Sumatra. While at high school he began training at a dance studio in Bukittinggi and also participated in a Minang-Malaysian cultural exchange programme.
In 1995 he journeyed to Jakarta, where he studied dance at the Jakarta Institute of the Arts (IKJ). He created his first work (Ladies Night) in 1997 while still studying, winning second place with it in a competition staged by the Gedung Kesenian Jakarta. His outstanding ability saw Zubir become a regular guest at art centres across Indonesia. The Gedung Kesenian Jakarta, Taman Ismail Marzuki and Teater Utan Kayu are just a few of the locations where Zubir has presented his innovative dance work. In 2007, he was invited to perform one of his signature works, Saat, at the National Museum in Singapore as part of the Five Pieces: New Dance in Indonesia programme.
