This warp-faced textile consists of cotton warp-faced weave with gold couched embroidery. The couched embroidery depict the squid and pucuk rebung (bamboo shoot) motif. The textile is a ceremonial tubular dress created and worn by the Abung people, and has a seam on one side. Therefore this dress could be opened to double it’s size. The Abung people of southern Sumatra created such tapis to represent the wealth and prestige of the wearer’s family. Such a tapis was once worn during ritual occasions such as reaching adulthood, birth, and death. Overall wear, especially to the couching (see detail image for a represention of this wear). It can be termed in very good condition as this wear is never significant enough to interfere with the aesthetics. 46″ x 25″ (46″ x 59″ opened) (YAT)
