Site Description
This very large river delta comprises some of the most extensive mangrove forests of Sumatra with intact transitions to freshwater and peat swamp forests. Along the coast lay vast mudflat areas, some more than 1 mile wide at low tide. There are few large coastal villages; very characteristic of the area are the many pole villages built in front of the coast on the mudflats. A large part of the swamp forest has already been felled. Principal vegetation: Mangrove forests. More than 30 species are known to occur. The main species are: Rhizophora mucronata, R.apiculata, Avicennia alba, A.marina, Sonneratia alba, S.acida, Ceriops tagal, Ceriops candoleana, Xylocarpus sp. There are also some extensive Nypa swamps.
Site Location
This coastal site incorporates much of the area between the Banyuasin and the Buluranriding rivers and extends south towards the provincial city of Palembang. It is part of the coastal swampland forming a continuous belt along the east coast of Sumatra.
