Padang Sugihan Wildlife Reserve

sugihan

General
Padang Sugihan Wildlife Reserve comprises an area of 75,000 ha. in south Sumatra province and was established in 1983 after 232 Sumatran Elephants had been driven into the area in December 1982. Two big rivers, the Air Sugihan and the Air Padang constitute the eastern and western border of the reserve.
The general topography of the area is flat without exception. The reserve contains four habitat types divided in five distinct north-south belts intersected by man-made primary canals. From the Padang river in the west to the Sugihan river the east there is successively riverine swamp forest, Melaleuca forest, mixed peatswamp forest, Melaleuca forest and open grassland. The canals, which had been dug for a proposed transmigration project and which are actually blackwater streams form the fifth habitat type inside the reserve.
