Latitude : 1 16 12 N Logitude : 102 15 41 E
Altitude : 0 to 20 metres
Area : 111500 ha Wetlands: 0 ha
Tenure : Government of Indonesia
Site Description
Two-thirds of the island formerly consisted of peatswamp forest, but some of this has been cleared for townships, road construction and by logging operations. The greater part of these forests consists of a stunted and species-poor type, known in Southeast Asia as “padang” forest. This forest type is characteristic of very deep, nutrient-poor peat. A further 8% of the island formerly consisted of mangroves, nipah swamp and mixed saline swamps. There is an attractive lake, Danau Tanjung Padang, on the island. Principal vegetation: 3,000 ha of peatswamp forest.
Site Location
Pulau Padang is located off the coast of Riau Province of Sumatra, and is seperated from the mainland by the 4km to 5km wide Panjang Strait. It measures roughly 55km for north to south and 35km at its widest point.
