Pulau Simeulue Wildlife Reserve

 Simeulue-02-800

Simeulue--01-800

General
The proposed Pulau Simeulue Wildlife Reserve comprises an area of 27,000 ha. in the interior of the north-western part of the island Simeulue. Simeulue lies in deep waters about 100 kilometres north-west of Sumatra. Due to its deep-water surroundings the island has been isolated from the mainland for a long time which has led to the development of a distinct flora and fauna, including one endemic snake species, two endemic bird species and several endemic sub-species.
Simeulue island has an estimated area of about 1,800 square km. and is about 100 km in length. The interior consist of forested hills, up to 576 m., while the narrow coastal plains are fringed with coconut and clove groves. The northern coast is marshy and covered with mangrove forests. Along the coast, many coral reefs and small islands can be found.
The proposed wildlife reserve is located in Simuelue Barat district and consists of rugged well-forested terrain with steep slopes. The site includes two fresh-water lakes: Danau Laut Tawar and Danau Etutuk, both reported to be rich in fish and crocodiles.
Access
The island can be accessed by boat from Meulaboh, Aceh provice on the Sumatran mainland. Meulaboh can be reached by bus from Banda Aceh, Tapaktuan or Medan. The ferry to Simeulue goes two times a week and arrives in Sinabang, at the east coast of Simeulue. To reach the reserve area you have to hire some local means of transportation.
Accommodation
Simeulue is off the beaten track. No official accommodation can be found but you can always contact the local kepala desa.
