Lariang Wildlife reserve

General
The proposed 37,000 ha. Laring Wildlife Reserve straddles the border between South Sulawesi and Central Sulawesi province, with 70% lying in South Sulawesi. The site consists of sandy beaches, dunes and mangrove forest on peat soil, backed by extensive peat swamp forests.
Mangrove forests formerly covered about 110,000 ha. of South Sulawesi but most has been converted to brackish water fish ponds (tambak). In 1990, only about 34,000 ha. remained of which 8,000 ha. is located in the Lariang Wildlife Reserve. The mangroves are very important as a refuge, feeding and breeding ground for large numbers of migratory birds and certain endemic species.
Of the 65,000 ha. of peat swamp in the Lariang – Lumu Plains, 22,300 ha. has been included in the reserve proposal. The site is the largest remaining area of lowland forest in South Sulawesi and as such the last refuge for many endemic lowland species. Unfortunately, the Lariang Wildlife Reserve has yet to be gazetted while it is threatened by several planned transmigration projects in the area.
