West Papua

Wewe Koor Nature Reserve

General

The proposed Jamursba-Medi, Sausapor and Wewe-Koor Nature Reserves consist of three turtle beaches stretching a length of about 85 km. along the northern coast of Vogelkop peninsula. The sites hold one of the largest colonies in the world of the Leatherback Turtle.

Threats to the wildife in the area have developed because of poaching. However, WWF, active in the area since 1993, works together with Indonesian officials to reduce turtle and turtle egg poaching through effective patrolling of the beach area and a public education campaign.
