Man’s Mantle / Blanket Timor (TP)

From Ayotupas in the southern highlands of West Timor this handsome, three panel men’s mantle/blanket was created on a backstrap loom using a time-consuming, warp-wrapping technique called ‘buna’. The handspun cotton threads are colored by natural dyes, with a handsome indigo blue in the largest bands. Graphic depictions of diamond-backed lizards (crocodiles?) with curled tails form the main motifs, and are surrounded by miscellaneous lines probably symbolizing water. From the late 20thC., but using traditional techniques and materials, it is in excellent condition. Size: 78″ x 41″

cotton tubedress (TP)

This colorful four panel, all cotton tubedress is possibly from the Dirma region where it would have been worn as ceremonial dress for dances. Concentric diamonds and figures on chairs (kings?) in the ‘buna’ warp-wrapping technique, as on the bottom panel, are popular design motifs in this area. This piece also includes aircraft in the lines of decoration! Attractive bands of warp ikat in the two central panels in golden yellow and dark brown are accented nicely with red, light yellow and purple warp stripes. Condition is very good, tho a bit of discoloration is apparent along the seam, but not as dark as in the photo. This piece displays very nicely opened up, as shown, or folded in half in either direction. Size: 60.5″ x 48″ if opened

woman’s three panel tubular skirt (TP)

This woman’s three panel tubular skirt, or ‘tais’, is probably from the Biboke area of central West Timor, where they are known for warp ikat and fine warp-wrapping. This one utilizes three colors in the ikat in the largest panel with a lively, nicely graphic pattern featuring bird and foliate motifs. Flanking it are border panels also with ikat decoration in the form of bird motifs, and edged with fine, small ‘dentil’ motifs in a warp-wrapped technique. Condition is good, with only a bit of color fade from washing and wearing. It displays nicely and could be closed, as shown, or opened up and doubled in size. : 43″ x 30.5″ not opened
