‘Pahikung’ Runner from Sumba (TP)

This highly decorative ‘pahikung’, or supplementary warp, runner is beautifully colored and finely woven. Groups of geometric motifs flank a central panel with designs taken from old Dutch coins, along with mythical beasts. The rich colors are from natural dyes and hand-coloring. (Please see Gillow, John; Traditional Indonesian Textiles; p.34-5.) Size: 71″ x 21.75″

‘Pahikung’ Runner from Sumba (TP)

This unusual ‘pahikung’, or supplementary warp, textile shows ship motifs possibly for life passage ceremonies, or perhaps after exposure to so-called ‘ship cloths’/’tampan’ from Sumatra. Colored with natural dyes, it is also hand-colored in blue and ochre. (Please see Gillow, John; Traditional Indonesian Textiles; p.34-5.) Size: 70.5″ x 20″

Runner / Shoulder Cloth (TP)

Woven using both the ikat and supplementary warp techniques, this textile depicts a motif of forward facing figures, which is one of the oldest designs used in textiles from east Sumba (Please see Decorative Arts of Sumba, p.75-81). Probably a king, the man wears only a horn-shaped ‘lamba’ headdress decorated with ‘mamuli’. Combining the two techniques and using multiple colors in the ikat area, this piece demonstrates skillful weaving of traditional motifs in a modern textile. Natural colored cotton plus hand-applied color. Size: 81.5″ x 17.5″ $195.00

Pasemah ‘Adat’ Runner (TP)

Made of cotton, this textile from central Sumatera is ‘adat’, or made for ritual use. The unusual central field of purple/pink is created by rust-colored red warps and purple wefts; lengthwise edges are indigo. The ends are decorated in gold and silver songket and differ slightly, perhaps as gender references. It has one small hole and some old stains, but otherwise is in fine condition, reflecting its importance to its owners. Pasemah textiles were little known until a decade or so ago; they are now prized by collectors. First third 20thc. Size: 56.25″ x 23.3″

Pasemah Songket Runner (TP)

This finely woven silk and fine cotton textile from Pasemah, in central Sumatera, was probably used as a shouldercloth or headwrap, tho no fold lines are in evidence. It consists of a field of red and black plaid bordered by two identical ends with songket bands and rosettes (the metal has worn off most of the threads). The ends are beautifully finished with fine silk edging and small knots made from warp threads. This piece has a few small holes, one tear (see damage) and a few spots, but is in otherwise excellent condition. Pasemah textiles were little known until the last decade or so, but are now prized by collectors. First third 20thc. Size: 80″x30″

Hinggi (M)

48″x 110″plus fringe Warp ikat. Cotton.
This striking ikat was unfortunately too long for my photo wall. The wide dark alligator border and narrow strip border at the bottom are repeated at the top. This man’s shoulder cloth or sarong is probably 20 to 30 years old. It was dyed with the traditional indigo and kombu, and is in excellent condition…..$750
