Flores Tubedress ‘Lawo Luka Semba’ or ‘Lawo Sinde’ (TP)

From the Lio district of eastern Flores, this woman’s warp ikat tubedress is known as ‘lawo sinde’ or ‘lawo luka semba’. Textiles with this patterning are considered to be of the highest status and are worn only by members of the dominant clans. It comprises four panels and has been opened up to show all its glory. Clearly ‘patola’ inspired, the center field has an elaborate pattern of delicately rendered elliptical shapes similar to the one on men’s head and shouldercloths known as ‘luka semba’. Flanking the center, narrow bands of fine pattern alternate with finely striped bands of chocolate brown. The vertical edges are bordered with multiple bands of pattern which, although comprising four panels sewn together, align nicely to form a frame for the composition. Made of a cotton/rayon blend, it has a lovely handle, and has been colored with natural dyes in a harmonious palette of rich browns and dark blue. Condition is very good; probably from mid-late 20th century. (Please see Robyn Maxwell’s Textiles of Southeast Asia, p.224, #319.) Size: 63″ x 53″ (opened
