Provenance is Sikka. Locally referred to as ‘utang mitang (sikka). Handwoven fabric made of cotton Consists of two panels sewn together. A ‘black’ cloth. The overall color of this two panel cotton sarong is indigo blue. Each panel contains a wide ikat band and a narrower one. The main motif is in the wide band. For the motifs in the wide band only indigo is used. Parts of the main motif appear in the less wide ikat band. The sequence of bands of this sarong is strictly symmetrical. The bands of the sarong do not belong to one single symmetrical cluster, but a number of smaller symmetries are nested within, or overlapping larger symmetries, each with its own center. The ikat bands are centers of symmetry and flanked, on both sides, by morinda red ikat bands and narrow bands of which some have ikat and others have not. All ikat bands are separated from one another by monochrome bands or threads. The colors are from natural dyes. Condition very good. Older than 30 years. Size 160 cm x 60,5 cm Width is doubled when opened. Weight 717 gr. (Crus)

Provenance Sikka. Locally referred to as ‘utang m象ng (sikka). Handwoven fabric made of cotton. Consists of two panels sewn together. The yarns used were handspun. A ‘black’ cloth, after the background color of the main ikat bands. Each panel contains a wide ikat band and a less wide ikat band. The main motif is in the wide band and identifies the natal group of the weaver. For the sharply made traditional motifs in the wide band only the color indigo is used. The sequence of bands of this sarong is strictly symmetrical. The bands of the sarong do not belong to one single symmetrical cluster, but a number of smaller symmetries are nested within, or overlapping larger symmetries, each with its own center. The wide ikat band is also a center of symmetry and flanked, on both sides, by indigo ikat bands with white geometric motifs. Near the upper and bottom borders we distinguish a less wide ikat band with good sharply made white ikat figures on an indigo background. The central part of the sarong has ikat bands and narrow ikat dot stripes. The colors are from natural dyes. Condition very good. Older than 30 years. Size 145 cm x 61 cm. Width is doubled when opened. Weight 702 gr. (Crus)

A long cotton sarong consisting of four panels. The main colour is indigo blue. The outer panels contain a symmetrical band structure in which the central band has white ikat motifs, see animals and geomterical figures. All bands are in warp direction. From this central band one distinguishes a lot of other broader and narrower ikat bands and in many places brown, blue and orange monochrome warp stripes. The two inner panels contain five white ikat motifs bands each, alternated by narrow black monochrome bands flanked by orange stripes and narow ikat bands with white dots and waving lines. The sarong ends are black (Crus)

The bands of the sarong do not belong to one single symmetrical cluster, but a number of smaller symmetries are nested within, or overlapping larger symmetries, each with its own center. The ikat bands are separated from one another by morinda red bands with ikat wave patterns and some supplemetnary warp weaving. The colors are from natural dyes. Condition very good.
