Cotton warp ikat with sungkit borders. 32″x 37½.” This tubular skirt has meticulous weft-wrapped details in the borders and very fine ikat. The back is identical. It is in excellent condition. The side seam could be opened to display a piece twice this size, if desired….. $485

Ainaro

Provenance Ainaro. Handwoven fabric. Small cloth from Ainaro, East Timor. The cloth seems to be one panel of a two panel selimut. There is one ikat design stripe near the border in warp direction. Motifs are flowers in blue ikat on a black background. The cloth contains four groups of narrow ikat dot stripes in black on orange and black on green. The spaces between the ikat stripes have narrow plain stripes in bright colors. The borders in weft direction have attractive bands of twining, also in bright colors. Condition good. Ambenu

Provenance Ambeno. Locally referred to as tais. Handwoven fabric. Consists of two panels sewn together. The yarns used were handspun. Sarong made of handspun cotton. Sarongs from Ambenu have the multiple ikat stripes and plain red and indigo stripes characteristic of the men’s cloth of Ambenu. The sarong here has two non equal panels as is sometimes found with selimuts. Two wider and thre narrower whit/ indigo ikat design stripes with kaif motifs and stylized crocodiles. The colors are from natural dyes. Condition very good. Appr. 15 years old. Size 110 cm x 68,5 cm Double. Weight 685 gr. (Crus)

Bobonaro

Provenance Bobonaro. Handwoven fabric. Consists of two panels sewn together. The yarns used were handspun. The central part contains six meandering ikat stripes. The spaces between these stripes have three ikat dot stripes. The two side parts show an ikat design stripe with a lizard motif in white and light indigo on a black background. These ikat design stripes are the centre of a symmetrical arrangement of white ikat meandering stripes. Spaces between these stripes are filled with narrow ikat dot stripes. The borders of this selimut have twined stripes in red and yellow at the borders in weft direction. The colors are from natural dyes. Condition very good. Appr. 20 years old. Size 208 cm x 78,5 cm. Covalima

Provenance Covalima. Handwoven fabric. Good symmetric two panel cloth with four ikat design stripes against a red background. Made in the Covalima district, near the border with West-Timor. The fine ikat motifs, in red, white and brown, are possibly stylized human figures. The design stripes are flanked by stripes, of which some are plain red and some have broken meander ikat motifs. The spaces between these stripes are filled with narrow blue and white plain stripes. Under and bottom ends have a twined stripe in contrasting colors. Condition very good. Appr. 15 years old. Provenance Dili. Locally referred to as lagkol. Handwoven fabric. Three panel selimut from East Timor, Dili region. The center panel of this heavy selimut is black. All the decoration is on the side panels, The side panels each have one main design stripe in sotis weaving technique. Sotis is a warp-float or supplementary warp weave. The motifs are flower figures in yellow against a red background. This sotis design stripe is flanked by three narrower sotis stripes on each side. Two of them have a white waving line in white on pink and one has a yellow line on red. The borders of the selimut in warp direction are black and the borders in weft direction have a fine twining stripe with diamond shaped motifs in alternating orange on green and green on orange. Provenance Dili. Locally referred to as tais. Handwoven fabric. Two panel sarong in Belu style from East Timor, region Dili.One can distinguish two techniques used: ikat and sotis. Sotis is a warp float weaving technique. Properties of a Belu style sarong are a striped central part, two design stripes more to the outer regions and black borders. Here the design stripes are made in ikat weaving and dyeing technique, The ikat stripes have yellow flower motifs on a black background. The ikat design stripes are accompanied by three sotis stripes on each side. The arrangement of these sotis stripes towards the ikat stripe is symmetrical. The sotis stripes are flanked by groups of plain narrow stripes. Condition very good. Appr. 15 years old. Size 120 cm x 70 cm. Weight 476 gr. (Crus)

The red background has dark blue plain narrow stripes. The panels each have an ikat design band showing white animals on a black background. The ikat stripes are accompanied by six sotis stripes with geometric figures. The borders of the sarong are black, with a narrow sotis stripe at the ends. Condition good. Appr. 15 years old. Provenance Dili. Locally referred to as tais. Handwoven fabric. With the two ikat design stripes near the ends, this is a sarong in Belu style. The body of the sarong is striped. Nine plain dark red stripes which are bordered by groups of brightly colored narrow stripes, with an ikat dot stripe in the center. The two ikat design stripes show white ikat motifs on black. The cotton for these stripes is handspun. The borders of the sarong are black. Condition very good. Appr. 15 years old. Size 105 cm x 64,5 cm. Double. Weight 591 gr. (Crus)

Provenance Dili. Local name tais. Handwoven fabric. Two panel selimut made in East Timor, Dili region. The central part has narrow plain black stripes on a bright blue background. Each panel has a red band with yellow and green flowers in a supplementary weft technique. These red bands are flanked by three sotis stripes with geometric figures, in white-blue and yellow-red. Provenance Dili. Handwoven fabric. The ‘selendang’ shows a side sotis design stripe with white stars on a red background and the text TIMOR LESTE, which is Portuguese for East Timor. This main stripe is flanked by two narrower sotis stripes with geometric line motifs in yellow on a blue background. The spaces between the design stripes have alternating green and orange stripes. The borders in warp direction have narrow sotis stripes in the same colors as the central sotis stripe. Condition good. Size 114 cm x 18 cm. Weight 61 gr.. (Crus)

Provenance Dili. Handwoven fabric. This cloth in one piece shows a wide central design band with white flower motifs on a red background in a continuous supplementary warp technique. The side parts of the cloth each have two design stripes with flower motifs in the same technique. A stripe with yellow flowers on dark red and one with white on a lighter shade of red. The design stripes are accentuated by groups of narrow plain stripes. The borders in warp direction have a sotis stripe in yellow and pink, the borders in weft direction are decorated with a twined stripe in yellow and dark red. Condition very good. Appr. 15 years old. Three of them have white motifs on a red background and two have the same yellow motifs on red. Between these sotis stripes there are accompanying groups of plain narrow stripes with orange, yellow blue, pink. The borders near the fringes have a twined stripe in the colors yellow and red. Los Palos

Provenance Los Palos. Handwoven fabric. One single panel. The panel has one wide ikat stripe and three narrow ones. All ikat stripes are accompanied by a large number of narrow plane stripes and sotis pin stripes. The stripe groups have fixed color patterns, with a yellow stripe in the center. Near the borders in weft direction there are two small twined figures. At the border near the (partly cut) fringes there is a band of twining in yellow and red, flanked by blue red twined stripes. Condition very good. Appr. 15 years old. Size 194 cm x 55 cm. Weight 359 gr. (Crus)

Provenance is Los Palos. Handwoven fabric. Two panel selimut from Los Palos, eastern part of East Timor. Each panel has a narrow ikat design stripe in Belu style. These ikat stripes have abstract white dots and lines on a black background. Apart from these ikat design stripes the selimut has narrow ikat dot stripes flanked by narrow plain stripes. One could say, that there is a central region with predominantly yellow stripes and two side regions with predominantly blue and pink stripes. All ikat dot stripes are flanked by at least three plain stripes. Due to the great number of plain and ikat dot stripes this cloth has its own and special character. The borders near the fringes have a twined stripe in two shades of pink. Condition very good. Appr. 20 years old. Size 106 x 168 cm. Weight 671 gr. (Crus)
