General
Gunung Kateri Wildlife Reserve is located in the SE of West Timor and includes Rawa Mangrove Maubesi Nature Reserve, which is one of the least disturbed mangrove swamps on Timor. Gunung Kateri comprises an area of 45,800 ha. of relatively undisturbed mixed deciduous dry forest on poor soils. An area of 1,800 ha. consists of mangrove swamp, some cold mud volcanoes and sandy beaches, together forming the Rawa Mangrove Maubesi Nature Reserve.
Access
To visit the area base yourself in Betun. Betun can be reached by bus either from Atambua, the capital of Belu district, or from Soe. From Atambua just take a bus heading for Bolan and get out in Betun. From Soe or Kupang take a bus to Atambua and get out in Halilulik. From Halilulik catch a bus to Betun. To get to the reserve area arrange some kind of transportation in the village.
