Gunung Niut Wildlife Reserve
General
Gunung Niut Wildlife Reserve covers an area of 180,000 ha. and is located in the north-western part of West Kalimantan province. The reserve consists of low mountains and hills, with sub-mountain forests surrounding the highest peak: Gunung Niut (1,701 m.). Other habitats comprise lowland tropical rainforest and Kerangas (heath forest). Gunung Niut has several scenic waterfalls and rapids at the headwaters of the Sambas, Sekayam and Landak rivers which drain the area.
Several Land Dayak settlements with about 5,500 inhabitants, who live from shifting cultivation and hunting, are located inside the reserve.
Access
Gunung Niut Wildlife Reserve can be reached by public transport from Pontianak. Buses go through Sanggauledo to Dawar. From Dawar trails lead into the reserve.
