Mahakam

Latitude : 0 21 0 S Logitude : 116 19 48 E
Altitude : 20 to 300 metres
Area : 200000 ha Wetlands: 40000 ha
Tenure : Government of Indonesia
Site Description
The site is a lowland area within the Mahakam lowland region, at the middle course of Mahakam river. An extensive floodplain forms three major lakes in the area, namely : Lake Semayang (12,000 ha), Lake Melintang (13,000 ha), and Lake Jempang (15,000 ha). Some smaller lakes occur are L.Batu Bumbu (450 ha), L.Lokang (400ha), L.Siran (750 ha) and L.Jantur (200 ha). This site includes the entire lakes and waterway system of Mahakam river. The lakes are unique and of value to waterbirds. The Mahakam river is inhabited by a distinct subspecies of the rare Freshwater Dolphin Orcaella brevirostis. The surrounding forest includes vast areas of freshwater swamp and peatswamp forest. Huge areas of the peat swamp forest were destroyed in the 1982/83 forest fires. Based on Landsat TM imagery 1996, the remaining extensive peat swamp forest occur at the north of Lake Melintang. The main peat swamps are thought to be domed-shape, with Gambut Land System. However, areas surrounding the lakes which is an alluvial plains are open areas. This area is inhabited by large numbers of people and the river is important for transport, and fishing activity. To date, the lakes face threats from high rate of sedimentation. Land clearings at the catchment areas of the Mahakam river have worsen this situation and threat the protected Mahakam Dolphin species. According to Rahmat (1996), weeds have covered almost 75% of the surface area of the lakes. The main weeds include Eichornia crassipes, Salvinia natans, Panicum stagninum, Panicum colonum, and Mimosa nigra. The weeds have formed some floating “islands” .
Site Location
The wetland site is located in East Kalimantan Province, at the middle course of Mahakam river.
