Site Description
A small bay protected from the notorious waves of the Indonesian Ocean by the rocky Nusa Kambangan. It has two entrances: one at the southern end of a sandy coastal barrier, the other to the west of Nusa Kambangan. Freshwater and silt are delivered by the Citanduy River and some smaller streams. The area has extensive mangrove swamps dissected by tidal creeks. Marshy or muddy land areas exist around Segara Anakan and are of major importance to resident and migratory waterbirds. The coastal plain of Cilacap consists of lower swampy areas, valleys and ricefields, and higher old dunes and beach ridges, usually occupied by human settlements. There are a few oxbow lakes in the area: abandoned meanders of the Serayu River. There is at least 18,500 ha of mangrove swamp, 200 ha of tidal marsh and 8,200 ha of swamp converted to rice culture. The 24,000 ha mentioned above consists of the natural marshes and mangrove forests and the lagoon. The mangrove forest consists of six zones: The outermost zone is the Avicennia marina – Sonneratia alba zone, followed towards the inland by the Rhizophora, the Bruguiera, the Xylocarpus, Heritiera, the Bruguiera cylindrica and the Nypa fruticans zones. Principal vegetation: Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora conjugata, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Bruguiera parviflora, Ceriops candoleana, Xylocarpus sp., Avicennia sp., Sonneratia sp. See for detailed (but old) account of the cilacap forest De Haan 1931.
