Batik Hipwrap (‘Kain Panjang’)- for Muslims in Sumatra (TP)

Made in Java for the Muslim market in Sumatra, and using a stamp (‘tjap’) technique, this richly colored cloth is decorated with geometric, flower-like patterns which are clearly derived from the much-prized ‘patola’ cloths of India. Bordered with jewel-like diamonds of varying hues the color combination is unusual and very appealing. Of relatively recent production, it could be worn or used decoratively. Condition is excellent; last quarter of the 20thC. Size: 93″ x 40.75″

Batik Hipwrap (‘Kain Panjang’) – ‘Pagi/Sore’ Style (TP)

This style of hipwrap is named after the two ways in which it can be worn: the dark end on the outside in the daytime (pagi), and the light end in the late afternoon/evening (sore). Possibly from the north coast of Java, it was drawn using the ‘tulis’, or hand drawn, technique and has amazingly complex patterning, fine detailing and sophisticated coloration; a lot of work went into this piece. The base material is fine cotton and the handle is lovely. Condition is very good and it could be worn or used decoratively. We think it is from the mid-20th century. Size: 95″ x 41″

Batik Shouldercloth or Headwrap (TP)

Probably used as a shoulder cloth or head cloth, this textile is smaller than the typical sarong size. Made using the ‘tjap’, or stamp, technique it depicts phoenixes in four different configurations in red, on a background of fish scale motifs in indigo, on cream colored cotton. The colors are nicely muted to a soft mellowness and the cotton is soft to the touch, suggesting some age for this piece. The color combination and the ‘fringe’ design on the ends suggests an origin of Jambi in Sumatra, though we cannot be sure. Condition is very good, with only a few small stains and a one inch tear on one end. Size: 66″ x 20.5″

Batik Tua / Ancient Batik collected in Sulawesi from Java, Indonesia, 19th century
Technique: Handdrawn batik on handspun cotton
Description: An overall diamond pattern is composed of a center stepped motif which alternate red and blue. The red ones have a white center block filled with either a blue rectangle or nine blue dots. The blue stepped designs have an eight-petalled flower outlined in red with white dots. A white grid radiates out from the center block design. There is a light brown selvage. Comment: This is a very old batik, but the style is one that relates closely to ceplok motifs seen in Central Javanese batik. (The textile is pictured as mounted on a brick-red backing cloth.)
Condition: One end is missing and there is damage along one edge.
Dimensions: 1′ 9 1/2″ x 4′ 3 1/2 ( .55 x 1.31 m ) (TG)

Simbeut, ceremonial wrapper or hanging, Badui people, Banten, West Java, first quarter 20th century or earlier, rice-paste resist patterning on woven bark cloth, natural dye.
The Badui can perhaps be called “the Amish of Indonesia.” They live in isolation in the mountains of West Java, and adhere strictly to a code of conduct which disavows all modern technology, formal education, currency, and abuse of the natural surroundings. Their religion, an archaic belief system blending animism and Hindusim is called Sunda Wiwitan, meaning “the pure root”. Travellers from outside of the Badui community are not allowed into the inner region of the Badui lands, and can only visit the outer Badui villages by invitation and with various conditions on entry. They may not sleep in Badui lands. ( MT)

Kudhung woman’s head covering, Jambi, Sumatra, early to mid-20th century, hand-drawn batik on imported cotton, natural and aniline dyes.
The composition is stronly influenced by Indian trade textiles found in Sumatra, and resembles highly prestigious sarasa (Sumatran colloquial term) trade textiles found in Jambi and elsewhere in Sumatra. Sarasa were produced in workshops on the Coromandel Coast, with a large central round or diamond-shaped motif. At left is a 17th or 18th century example found in Sumatra. (MT)
